That's a lot of Flies!

I saw this piece entitled "Flies on Canvas" by Damien Hirst in the White Cube Gallery here in London. It really is flies stuck on a canvas! The theme of the gallery show was black, so there were many dark pieces. I have to say, this was the most textural piece of the show. What I liked best about it was that the closer I came to the piece I could see all the delicate little fly wings sticking out and reflecting light. I guess it wasn't completely black after all! Who knew flies could be so interesting? I must say I like them a lot better when they are stuck to a canvas. Could this piece say something about a need for control? Relief? Nature? Death? Who knows?....

Wow, that is a lot of flies! You know, I was just thinking about putting up some fly art over on my blogsite... We've got lots of potential subjects out here by the lake...
Other thoughts: it reminds me a bit of restaurants in Tanzania.
One of my favorite works in this show "Dark Matter" was entitled "Lake Superior, Cascade River" by Hiroshi Sugimoto. From the looks of it, it looked like a black sheet of glossy paper. I could see my reflection in it. I could barely make out a dark area that formed in the middle of the work. As I stepped away from the piece, I could see that it was actually a photograph! I'm not quite sure how he did it, but it was so dark that it almost appeared black. It was extremely intriguing, causing me to question photography, the representation of nature, and the powerful statement of the color black. And I still like how I could make out my reflection in it. It's cool to be able to identify your own physical presense within a gallery and within a show. The gallery was very light, which helped aviod a sense of depression.
