Life without creative effort is unthinkable...

"...and the whole coarse of human culture is one continuous effort of the creative will of man."

This was stated by Naum Gabo, an artist associated with the constructivist movement around the time of the Russian Revolution in 1917. His art embraced new scientific theories and industrialization. He also said that "art derives from the necessity to communicate and to announce." I agree. I have often thought that artists carry a specific burden to communicate something they have experienced or felt. The following is a steel sculpture by Gabo made in 1916. An enlarged version is now on display at the Tate.

It's so exciting to come to your blog and have the most interesting of art lessons. I know you learned tons today, but what you choose as important and what impacts you, is what I want to hear all about! Thanks, girl. Miss you.

Amber, have you ever read anything by Joseph Campbell? In the book 'The Power of Myth', he says that artists (both artists of word and of image) are the shamans of our modern age. That is to say, artists push us past our own realities and try to make us see our world a different way, or, to take that even further, they convey to us spiritual truths to which we had perhaps been formerly blind. I love this idea that each person can reveal in his or her own way a truth about the Divine within us, for I absolutely believe that the creative human nature - coming directly from the Creator - is infinite. I love your blog, and I love even more the fact that we live right down the hall from each other so that we may talk of these things in person! :)
